Ideas into Reality
My parents own an indoor plant shop, they specialise in trying to find rarer and more unique plants at a fair price. Across the street from the shop is a market stall that only ever sold terrariums and been open at most 3 days a week. Ever since my parents opened the shop, the individual who owns the market stool has popped into the shop a couple of times and started to buy the same items as my parents but undercutting their prices by 50%+, which they can afford to do as being a market stall is a lot cheaper as well as opening 7 days a week.
My parents never bothered with terrariums as they didn’t want to step on their toes. We’ve seen a good few people now walking about with plants from the market and my parents are getting worried the market stall is going to slowly run them out of business. This is all located in a large city so I personally don’t think there’s much to worry about but my parents claim to be noticing a difference in their day to day and was looking for advice on what to do? Is this something that normally happens and can 2 shops in close proximity selling similar items at different prices can coexist?
I want to be able to give my parents advice and ease their worries a little bit and maybe help out where I can. I’ve read advice on another post similar mentioning to not try and chase the markets prices but offer a service that justifies the price increase and that low price can be a connotation of a worse product?
Sorry if this isnt super informal I suck at writing and thank you in advance for the advice.
TLDR: Parents moved to the city I live to open a plant shop, the only other ‘competition’ was a terrarium shop on the local market which was only open 3 days a week. As soon as my parents opened the shop the market stall owner scouted the shop, got the same plants for cheaper and started opening 7 days a week and now my parents are worried.
EDIT: They have no interest in a price war as they know its a doomed tactic.
