A few days ago, one of my long-term clients died in a home invasion. I don’t know the details, but he fought back and was shot. I was informed only when I called his brother, who once called me on his behalf to pass some information. I was contracted by him to work on his logo design, branding, website, and social media pages; he paid me $5,000 upfront. I personally did only the logo design and branding; that’s my specialty. I hired a guy to do the website and social media pages. That is thirty percent complete. But then I heard he died, so I have like three thousand that I should be refunding. The problem is that his brother isn’t responding any more. I know he has a girlfriend and a 2-year-old baby. His girlfriend is a stay-at-home mom, so I wanted to send them back this money, but I can’t contact them. What can I do? I really wanted to refund this money. He loved my work and dedication; he also referred a lot of other people and gave me a ton of business and clients, all of whom adore my work. I think the money will be of use to his baby and girl friends. I have his address; do you think I should mail a check or pay an order to his home? One of my friends said that if they can’t be contacted, then I should just use the money, which I think is unethical and bad. Has this ever happened to any one of you? What did you do?
