I am in my 40s and work in a corporate career. I have a pretty good resume with a high level of education including an MBA from a prestigious school. Currently make ~$200K annually for a large company you’ve heard of. I hate it and it is boring but it is fairly easy.
My dad (70) owns a construction-related business and is semi-retired. It’s a pretty good business but it is slowly dying because he doesn’t want to hustle anymore. He has been serving his local market for over 30 years. Many of his customers are older but he has a fair amount of younger customers as well.
There is a component of his business that is recurring monthly revenue of ~$8K before he does any work. (He does have to pay overhead out of this, but theoretically it could be very little if he wanted it to.)
When I was younger I worked with him and know how to do the actual work. I also have had sales roles in my career so enjoy dealing with people and understand the importance of customer service.
Should I take this business over? Honestly I kind of want to, but don’t want the hatred/boredom of my corporate job to be clouding my judgement. Just wanted to get some thoughts of current small business owners of my generation out in the trenches to try and get some perspective.
