Got laid off from a job I loved and was good at. Couldn’t find my way back in. So I’m trying something scary instead.

Hey Reddit,

This isn’t a post I ever thought I’d write, but here we are.

A while ago, I lost my job. Not because I was bad at it, not because I didn’t care, and not because I didn’t try. I genuinely gave it my best. I grew, took responsibility, learned fast, and showed up every day trying to do meaningful work.

And then it ended.

What followed was months of job searching, applications, interviews, silence, rejections, and a slow erosion of confidence. If you’ve been there, you know the feeling: days start blending together, motivation becomes fragile, and at some point you quietly start wondering if maybe you’re just… not that good after all. That part hit me harder than I expected. So instead of staying stuck in that loop, I’ve decided to try something different — and honestly, pretty terrifying.

I’m going to try to build a small company of my own. 💀

I don’t have a safety net. I don’t have funding. I don’t have some romantic “always wanted to be an entrepreneur” backstory. What I do have is a background in digital content, UX, learning design, and product thinking — basically, turning messy ideas into clear, usable things that actually help people. I’ve spent years doing that for organizations. Now I’m going to try doing it for myself.

With little to no real business experience. This subreddit (and Reddit in general) feels like the right place to do this, because it’s basically the collective brain of the internet — smart, skeptical, supportive when it counts, and very good at calling bullshit. I don’t want to pretend I have it all figured out. I don’t. That’s kind of the point.

My plan is to share: what I’m trying to build the decisions I make (good and bad) what I learn along the way the mistakes, doubts, small wins, and inevitable faceplants

Not as a “guru journey,” but as a real, ongoing process of trying to take responsibility for my own life after it didn’t go the way I planned. If nothing else, I want this to be honest. And if it does work — even a little — I want to be able to say I didn’t give up on myself when it would’ve been easier to do so.

If you’ve been through layoffs, career detours, or that quiet feeling of “I know I can do good things, why doesn’t life seem to agree?”, you’re not alone. And if you’re curious to follow along, offer advice, criticism, or just lurk… I’d genuinely appreciate having you here. I’ll post my first concrete step soon.

Thanks for reading.

Yours truly,

D
