Me and my friend started a business. Upon registering as a company my friend told me that it was necessary for us to be a 51/49 split. And that it wouldn’t be possible for us to be a 50/50 split. I questioned him, and he said his dad told him that we couldn’t do 50/50. I trusted what he said because prior to registering we did everything 50/50 and even to this day we still do everything 50/50. Also his dad runs a very successful business and it was in the heat of the moment when he told me this so I went along with the flow. However, after a couple months of doing business together, I’m starting to notice that he’s closed minded to things, and I see this as a problem, because even though he does treat it as a 50/50 partnership, if something were to happen I have a gut feeling he’d use the 1% to overrule. Suggesting and fooling me into a 51/49 was obviously for this reason. I’m wondering if there’s anything I can do to resolve this. Obviously I could ask for 1% but my gut says he wouldn’t agree and it would cause a fight. Things are good business wise and I wouldn’t want to ruin this partnership/friendship. He does everything 50/50 but he did the 51/49 manipulation for a reason. How should I proceed? If I’m not comfortable with asking for the 1%, what power moves can he do that would affect me?
