AITAH: Employee fired, bonus revoked

Hello Everyone,

Hired a new employee for my store about 3 months ago. Employee was great, even gave him a raise a few weeks back. The employee informed us he was getting a second job but it wouldn’t interfere with the store due to it being over night. No problem.

Two weeks ago the store has a really good day and I told the employee I’d give him a bonus for it. (Edit: the bonus was based of the stores sales and us doing well on a Saturday. I’m a big believer if I make money I want to share it with my employees.) The next shift is the weekend, our busiest time of the week. Employee texts me the Thursday night saying he won’t be coming in Friday because his other job needs him to train at the same time and he was choosing them. Kind of a slap in the face. No offer to find coverage or anything, just straight up he wasn’t coming in. I decide to ignore it cause it was the first issue, I was able to get someone to cover partial of his shift, so we were short staffed only half the day.

Friday night same text, he won’t be coming in Saturday as he has to train again for his new job. I am unable to find coverage for his shift and need to close one of our locations because we can’t run short staffed on a Saturday. 4 figures in revenue lost not mention just damage to brand image.

I tell him he’s fired. Employee is insistent he should still get the bonus, I don’t think he deserves a dime because he screwed me over back to back days and cost me thousands in revenue. Why should I give him extra money after what he did?

What do you guys think as business owners?
