Around this time last year, I got to work on a government project that helped manage them manage public schools. I’m not going to lie – I was a bit intimidated by the offer. I mean, this is the big government project we’re talking about; their standards had to be high. Our team was tasked with building the front-end page for the web app since the backend was already live.
But what caught me off guard was how outdated the backend design was. It was something our team couldn’t work it . We had this moment of “if you think it’s so bad, do it yourselves,” and we did – even without extra pay – because if we were going to do something, it had to be up to standard.
OMG we delivered and that brought a realization to me.
Why do you think there’s such a gap between the standard of technology used in private and government sectors even though the government spends way more? What can be done to bridge this gap and bring government software up to speed?
