Hey everyone, I could really use some advice. My boyfriend (soon to be engaged) is a working in a consulting company, and he wants to buy out the company and make me the 51% owner. the company is doing pretty well so far and it has good reputation. woman owned business do pretty well. The thing is, I’m new to the States, but I’m legal, have no money especially for making moves like this, and no job (something that I really like and would want to stay in) i have a PHD and a history of running small business in Middle East and know how to manage the company like his. I’m not worried that he might expect me to contribute financially or take on debt to buy the stake, he is doing it himself which makes it less risky since i dont have my own funds either. I’m not familiar with the local market, business environment, or legal framework here, which feels like a huge disadvantage. but he is willing to help me and asks me that I shouldn’t be worried since he is going to take the responsibilities and mentor me if needed. I’m concerned about relying too heavily on my boyfriend for business advice. What if our relationship changes or we have conflicts of interest? should i be terrified if the company fails or incurs debt, could I be personally liable? I don’t have any financial cushion. On the surface, it seems like an incredible opportunity, but l’m feeling overwhelmed and unsure. I’m really torn. On one hand, this could be a life-changing opportunity, but on the other hand, are the risks are significant?. Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on how to navigate this? What should I be considering that I might not have thought of yet? Thanks in advance for your insights!
