I am a software engineer + marketing engineer. About 3 years ago, I quit my job to start building my own venture. I knew that my venture was going to take some time to take off, so I also launched a side project that would enable me to pay my bills while my main venture took form.
Now that my main venture is off the ground, I no longer have time for the side business. The problem is that the side business grew in it’s own right. It did $60K in sales last year and with a ’24 YTD of 46K, it is poised to more than double by end of year.
The conundrum now is what to do with it. Initially I thought I’d just shut it down but now that feels like it’d be a waste of opportunity and all the work I put into it. Should I sell it then? Or should I take in an equity partner to handle day-to-day operations while I still participate from a strategy role? At this point, I am tempted to go with the latter. However, I am not so sure how I’d structure the buy-in for the partner. For example, how do I determine the buy-in price, what if the partner does not perform satisfactorily?
Any ideas?
EDIT:
NOT SELLING: For all those reaching out with interest in buying. I am not selling or considering selling at the moment. If I do, I would go through an agent.
POTENTIAL PARTNER: For those reaching out interested in partnership, please note that it is a B2B service business. I built the business using my specific skills and experience, which include:
B2B sales (absolute must) Business operations (absolute must) Account management – project management, business communication (absolute must) Marketing – mainly branding, copywriting, conversion optimization, content (nice to have but not necessary) Tech – software dev, web dev, and UX/UI design (nice to have but not necessary)
So if you are going to reach out as a potential partner, please have that in mind.
Thank you.
