I own and operate a small business within the U.S. in a State & Federally regulated field of work. This work requires both national accreditation & State licensing (Dept. of Health). Though they claim to be licensed, my major competitor (and likely largest producer in our local market) has operated without accreditation or licensing for many years. According to the law, each day they are in operation constitutes a potential criminal charge & fines. Moreover, their actions have the potential to cause an imminent threat to the health & safety of their customers and employees. I want this competitor to be held to the same standards and regulations as the rest of our industry.
I have attempted to inform the relevant authorities anonymously. However, neither our State agency nor the national accrediting agency will accept an anonymous report. I have every reason to believe that this competitor will retaliate against me personally, professionally, and even physically if I were to make a formal complaint.
Small business owners, what would you do in my position?
