I run a small service-based business. I have an employee that is dear to me. She is kind, loyal and works hard. In this regard, I truly couldn’t ask for more.
She had ADHD and it impacts her work daily. Over the last year, I have provided countless hours of additional training, support when she slips up on menial tasks, pardons when she errs because I can see she’s trying, and accommodations. According to everything I read on employing those with ADHD, I am doing all I can and all that is right to support her.
However, if I’m being honest- her consistent slip ups cause me a great deal of stress. It feels as though if I don’t keep my foot on the pedal, she will drop a ball. I catch about 1 error/week. These errors are simple, core responsibilities of her role; they are also client-facing and risk losing business, or at least make us look sloppy.
I am aware you “cannot fire someone due to their disability”. Clearly, I am not looking to do that. However, I am beginning to ask myself how I am going to continue with this person who is not showing sustained, increased independence in her role which she’s been in for 1.5 years.
I am interested in something between “fire her” and “suck it up” please.
