I’m just jumping on here to join the crowd of people who are advising against this company. I read the reviews years ago and thought we would be fine. Please don’t make the same mistake I did.
We have been operating with Square as our POS system and payment processor for the last four years, paying them 4.2% for every card transaction (which is double the average for traditional processing rates), on top of paying fees for services that were originally included with the Square plan that we chose.
We received an email from them recently stating that our account was banned, and that we could no longer use them as a payment processor. In the two weeks before deciding this, they also withheld our funds from us (around $12,000). This was right before we had to pay state taxes, and because our funds were withheld, we could not pay them on time, and so we suffered a $3000 fine. As a small business owner, these unexpected expenses are detrimental, and we already have to be very strict and responsible with our spending. This delay of our funds also affected our ability to pay payroll and order inventory on time.
After many phone calls with their “customer support” that were never returned and many “appeals” that never happened, I have to assume this company has 0 interest in helping loyal customers of theirs. Perhaps if we were a bigger company, they would care more.
This is so unfortunate and I am heartbroken. Prior to this, we didn’t have any issues with them. And I was so proud of the work that my partner and I put into this business. I’m only 25 years old and come from poverty. This business has been my life for the last four years. I feel so defeated. We went from processing thousands of dollars in sales and adding new team members to now being forced to let all of our employees go and close. And the register that we spent $1,500 on is now useless.
Please do not use this company. They will not help you if you need it, but will send you a cold email that says “We understand this affects your operations, and wish you the best of luck”
Edited to add: My frustration with this company lies solely in their negligent customer support. As a business owner, I can understand that they have to protect themselves first. But after all the money that we have given them, I think that a returned phone call or an appeal process is asking for the bare minimum.
