Ideas into Reality

How normal is it to have a complete shift in client base after starting your business?

Now I know many of the people in here run storefronts that actually hold and sell specific products so maybe this won’t apply to them as much as it does for others in this group but when I started running my SEO business I imagined I would be working with people who run businesses like landscaping, roofers, and other local services. You know people who would essentially benefit off of searches like “landscaper (city name)” or maybe even a restaurant with searches like “restaurants near me” and honestly that’s how it started because 99.9% of my advertising campaigns were targetted at these types of businesses; however, recently I’ve been experiencing a massive shift in clientele and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

It all started when I was approached by a guy who ran a local store so it fit in line with my original plan. We talked and eventually started working on his business until about a year later he revealed to me that he actually ran a wholesale company as well and he wanted to start doing SEO work on it. Now like I said most of my work was local and B2C up until this point but I was willing to give it a shot even though it was a national-level e-commerce store focusing on B2B instead. To make a long story short things went well and eventually, he would refer me to a buddy of his who also dealt with an online store, and before long I was posting about my success on forms and groups which garnered the attention of other ecommerce brands. Its gotten to the point where about 75% of my clientele is now Ecommerce SEO on a national level and 25% remains local whereas in the start it was probably 95% local and 5% e-commerce the 5% being just that guy. Has anyone else experienced this type of shift before in their own business? Don’t get me wrong I’m grateful but I feel like I’m almost losing the plot here.
